• rxvt-unicode: a fast and lightweight terminal emulator with many features (urxvt). Version in Ubuntu 8.04 messes with the language setting when the perl-tab plugin is enabled. This is fixed in Ubuntu 8.10

• vim-gtk or vim-gnome: gvim, the vim editor with gtk or gnome menu, buttons, font and mouse support, compiled with nearly every feature switched on.
• rtorrent: very efficient console client for libtorrent with dht support since Ubuntu 8.10
• sim-qt: sim-im multiprotocol instant messenger (qt frontend). Version 0.9.4.3-0ubuntu1 in Ubuntu 8.10 has a problem with icons.
• centerim: multiprotoco instant messenger (console frontend), low memory footprint.Version 4.22.5-1ubuntu2 has heavy problems with umlauts (fucked up utf-8 support)
